Copyright Vocabulary Words To Know:
Copyright- The exclusive right to make copies, license or exploit a creative work. As of Jan 1978, works are now protected by copyright for the lifetime of the creator plus 70 years after death.
Permission- Authorization granted in a formal consent for one’s use.
Public Domain- The status of a creative work whose copyright expired or never even existed. Also, public domain is a creative work that is in the public’s eye & can be seen in public areas.
Fair Use- a legal defense of why you are using a creative work with the exclusive rights of the copyright owner. Some argue it is “Fair Use” when using a copyrighted work for the good of the public/society. (in news, parody, critical commentary, or when teaching).
License- A formal Permission to use a creative work by an owner. A legal document granting permission with particular provisions outlined.
Attribution- The act of establishing a particular person as a creator of the work.
